Lusk Rawhide Wrestling - Bayard

This week I travelled again with the Miller family to another wrestling tournament. This time it was in Bayard, Nebraska. It was a long day. The tournament wasn't nearly as well organized as the one in Nebraska. The Lusk kids did well. With several first and second place finishes.
The challenge this week wist that there were matchs taking place in both the "old" gym and the "new" gym. Unable to be in both places at once, I missed a few matches. Plus, the lighting in the "old" gym was really dark. So I got fewer good pictures of those matches. The lighting in the "new" gym was excellent and I got lots of good photos there.
I took 2120 photos and have posted 329 in the gallery.

On Saturday, February 4, I traveled with the Miller's to Gering, Nebraska, for another tournament. It was a mess!!!
The club is participating in two different tournaments next weekend (2/18-19). I won't be able to ride with the Millers. So I'm looking for transportation...hint, hint!!!
After 3 weekends around 400+ kids, I caught a cold. Who'd of thought that would happen? ![]()
I took 3200+ photos and have posted 278 in the gallery.

Check out this photo. He's Eli, one of the kids from the wrestling on Saturday. This is the first picture I took, using a really long focal length lens at a really close distance. The photo looks out of focus which it is...mostly. If you look closely you'll see that the tip of his nose and the first strands of hair are in focus. Using a long lens, with a wide aperture, at a close distance there isn't a whole lot of depth-of-field.
BTW, mohawks seem to be the haircut of choice among young wrestlers.

My surgery in the middle of last summer kind of put a dent in my photography activities for 2011. But I've started 2012 off with something new. I traveled with the Miller family to the wrestling tournament in Newcastle, WY on Saturday to take photos for the Lusk Rawhide Wrestling team. I was a fun day and I'm definitely going to have to do it again!!!
Check out all of the photos in the photo gallery.

On Sunday there was a WDOC basketball tournament held Torrington. There were teams from WWC, WHCC, and WMCI. The camera got quite a workout. I took over 1400 photos. It was my first time trying to photograph basketball and I can say that it is quite hard.
Here are a few:

Yes, that is a goat. The various departments held fund-raising events and the department with the lowest total funds raised had to "kiss a goat". Administration lost and the Warden Myer was nominated for the task. Sgt. Dering and Ms. Crawford were challenged to also kiss the goat in exchange for large donations to the party fund.

I traveled south to take photos at last night's game at Lingle. Before the game I learned that the Principle does not want photos posted on the Internet. Therefore, I removed my previous post and the photos in the gallery. It's too bad, because I got a great shot last night. I'll have to find another way to distribute the photos to the player's families.

The main reason I wanted a new camera was because my Canon EOS Digital Rebel just did not perform well in the low light situations at the county fair. I chose the Nikon D3s because it was the highest rated camera for low light situations. I decided to put it to put it to the test by taking photos at last nights Niobrara County High School football game. I am excited to report that the camera worked beyond all that I had hoped. I photographed the entire game without the use of a flash. The photo lighting is excellent.
As for the photographer...well this was my first football game. I got lots of OK pictures. But it wasn't until I started to concentrate on single players that the composition stated to get interesting. Before that it was just a bunch of people running around doing something. With some practice, I think I can get some pretty good photos.
Here are a few of the better photos:
